Puttur, May 8: SDMC and the teachers at Koila Government Upper Primary School are a role model for others as they have planted several saplings of areca trees with the intention of establishing areca farms on the school campus.
Recently, the cultivation of areca nut has generated good demand. The school therefore decided to earn money from the cultivation of areca nut and to use the funds from the sale of the merchandise for the development of the school.
The saplings were planted under the guidance of Shashi Puthye, chairman of the school’s development committee. No less than 450 saplings of areca nut trees have been planted on the empty lot adjacent to the school’s playground.
Additionally, 30 young coconut trees were also planted around the school building. The watering of the plants is done using the borehole of the school itself.
The people of the village have also partnered with the school’s development committee in this noble work. Progressive farmer Rama Naika Enithadka provided about 500 Mangala breed areca nut seedlings from his nursery free of charge, while Lingappa Gowda Kadembyalu provided fertilizer in addition to cash assistance. Contractor Damodar Puthye covered the electricity and construction costs for the pumping station.
Shashikumar Puthye says, “Planting areca nut is done with foresight on school grounds. Koila gram panchayat chairman Harshith Kumar and the administrative committee and officials cooperated to dig pits to plant the saplings under the MNREGA project. The education lovers of the village have contributed enormously.
Lokesh C, Area Education Officer, said, “Planting areca nut seedlings with the help of teachers, school development committee and donors is a great job. The other public schools in the taluk should follow the same path.
