Hannibal Fire Department and Hannibal Public School team up for firefighting course | New

He now hopes to ignite that same desire in Hannibal’s youth, through a brand new class through the Hannibal Vocational and Technical Center that Hannibal firefighters will teach under an agreement with public schools in Hannibal. ‘Hannibal.

The fire department will provide transportation from the school to the fire department and it will be taught by a range of experienced instructors.

The course will be titled “Introduction to the Fire Service” and will include 11 curriculum milestones including the history of the fire service, learning protective equipment (PPE) and how to use their fire gear and SBA air tanks.

They will also learn fire dynamics and building construction, which will include understanding how buildings are constructed and how they do fire attacks.

“It’s all building to the point where they’ll be in a burning trailer,” Kempker said.

Students will perform search and rescue, looking for victims inside and they will make a fire attack in the burning trailer in a controlled environment.

“It’s the same fire attack that our firefighters practice every day when we have the opportunity to do our fire suppression training,” he said.

At the end of the class, they will earn a certificate from the University of Missouri and this is a class at the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Technical Institute.

“This is a basic class and not the Firefighter 1 and 2 certification,” he said. “But it gives a young person the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a firefighter.”

Kempker said they were excited about the partnership with the Hannibal School District.

“You can talk until you’re blue in the face inside a classroom, but this is a whole new avenue to get a student to the fire station, get up to speed, and they’ll get the exact same training that the brand new firefighters get,” he said. “Whether they’re working for us at the Hannibal Fire Department or whether they’re going to work for the Volunteer Fire Department , if they get involved in the fire service, they will be an integral part of the fire service and can give back to the community when they need it most.

Susan Johnson, superintendent of Hannibal Public Schools, matched Kempker’s enthusiasm for the program. She said two students, one from Hannibal High School and the other from another school that travels to the HCTC, are interested in taking the course, which could start as early as next week.

Johnson said the class is another way the Hannibal School District is preparing students to be career-ready.

“We really try to think outside the box, not only with what our kids want to do, but also with job needs,” she said. “There are many opportunities to attract our children to different and new ideas so that they can earn a living and enjoy the skills they love.”

She said it can also help keep graduates closer to home after graduation, so they can stay in northeast Missouri to earn an income if they choose to.

“As we begin to expand these programs more and more, we hope to see our students hired before they even graduate from high school,” Johnson said.
