Compton College Receives Hispanic-Serving Institution Designation by U.S. Department of Education

Compton College has again been designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) under Title III and/or Title V of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965, allowing it to receive funding additional federal funds to support and expand programs for Latinx students.

To be eligible for this status, Compton College must have at least 25% of its student body be Latinx, have at least 50% undergraduate students eligible for financial aid, as well as invest substantially in the instruction of all students. The college’s HSI designation is for the 2022-2023 academic year; the US Department of Education requires educational institutions to apply annually.

“Once again, we are proud to be designated as a Hispanic-serving institution and are thrilled to be able to request and receive additional resources to fund important educational programs and opportunities for students,” said Sonia Lopez. , president of the Compton Community College District. Latinx students make up 63% of Compton College’s student population, and the Compton Community College District Service Area has a Latinx population of nearly 70%. The college offers approximately 42 degree programs and 41 certificates, as well as resources and support designed to help students achieve their academic goals and transfer or enter the workforce.

The HSI designation and letter of approval from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Post-Secondary Education grants Compton College eligibility for a waiver of non-federal equity matching requirements under the Federal Work Study Program ( FWS), the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program (FSEOG), and the TRIO student support services program under Title IV of the HEA.
